Ten Things You Won’t Find at Globo Gym
The other day, one of my clients was joking with me about the fact that alot of the stuff we use in training is very unconventional and some of it (read most of it) is homemade. Here is a list of things you won’t find at your typical big box gym or “Globo Gym” for all of you Dodgeball fans out there.
1. A 40′ firehose.
It’s a fire hose that I capped both ends and filled with sand and water that we use for various slams and drags.
2. A Sledge Hammer
For beating on stuff of course.
3. A Squat Rack that Doesn’t Get Used For Curling
‘Nuff Said
4. Sandbags From 60-320 pounds
We do varius cleans, carries, and presses with them.
5. A Suspension Trainer
How To Properly Warm Up
I guess it’s because I’ve not worked in a membership driven gym for about two years now, but I’ve forgotten some of the things that people do incorrectly. Ok, well, I didn’t forget. It just wasn’t in the forefront of my thinking. One of the biggest problems I see are the amount of people who spend their time warming up on the treadmill or other cardio machines. This is completely wrong for a few reasons:
It’s Sagittal Plane Dominant- The human body’s movement is divided up into three planes: sagittal (front to back), frontal (side to side), and transverse (rotation). A good training program will work in all three planes and a warm up should do the same. Why would you train in all three planes, yet only warm up in one?
Training Myths
Figured I’d do a little myth busting today.
The Tabata Myth
Over the last couple years, many strength coaches, personal trainers, and fitness enthusiasts have embraced the idea that interval training for fat loss is superior to steady state cardio for fat loss. This being said, it was only a matter of time before someone stumbled upon the Tabata study. In this study, cyclists increased their VO2 max and lost bodyfat by including a :20on/:10off interval for 8 minutes in their training at 170% of VO2 max. As with anything else in the fitness industry, we took that idea and ran way too far with it (Myself Included). Everyone was coming up with different exercises to plug into what they thought was a Tabata protocol. The problem is that protocol was at 170% VO2 AND they were still doing long distance rides.

Here’s Where Your Trainer Is Getting It Wrong Part III
Not Continuing Their Education
This past weekend, I attended the Midwest Performance Seminar Hosted by Mike Robertson. It was right here in Indianapolis, so it made the decision to go a very easy one. Friday, Pat Rigsby and AJ Roberts were kind enough to throw in an all day fitness business seminar. I was very surprised that only about twenty of the seventy people registered for the seminar showed up for the fitness business seminar. Apparently, these other 50 were already making so much money that they weren’t interested in making any more. Somehow I doubt this is the case. Anyway, I thought with this blog post, I would give out some tips that I got from Saturday’s event.
The Single Leg Solution – Mike Robertson
- The training continuum is not black and white. It is a gray area. Your training should not be solely unilateral nor should it be solely bilateral

It’s about the program, not the workout
Too many times trainers are so interested in keeping their clients entertained that they lose sight of the end goal. They forget that it’s about the program, not the workout. They are so concerned with doing the latest gimmicky thing to impress their customers that they forget about what is important. What’s important is getting results, not being flashy.
Don’t get me wrong, keeping your clients interested is definitely important, but it is also important to have a program in place that is both scalable and produces results.
